To what extent are environmental challenges security issues? Why? In recent years, environmental problems have risen at the center of International policy and as a result of this; the general environmental awareness has increased. Often, the nature and extent of the environmental problems are revealed gradually, so they are difficult to effectively intervene in time. The scientific community still has a number of challenges solving environmental problems. The challenge is also to increase the scientific utilization of information more effectively in decision-making. When talking about environment-related security threats, climate change is a key thereat, facing the entire humanity. As evidence supporting climate change is for example, the increase in ground-level temperature, as well as melting polar and mountain glaciers. Human lives and ecosystems are threatened by extreme weather events; such as storms, hurricanes, floods and droughts, have become more common, areas of the world where diseases are common is increasing, and the agricultural potential in ecologically fragile areas has deteriorated. The issue also increases poverty especially in the developing countries, where in addition to environmental refugees, fights over limited use of natural resources will increase. Intensifying extreme weather phenomena's can also at least temporarily weaken our society ability to maintain its basic functions. Mitigating climate change is primarily a political question and its solutions require international co-operation and increasing political and economic measures from societies. Threats to the environment are in nature gradually accumulating or sudden accidents.
