Tim O'Brien and Khaled Hosseini are well known authors that have written novels about their life experiences and the daily dramas that they can relate to. Tim O'Brien wrote a famous novel, The Things They Carried after his experiences in the Vietnam War. Khaled Hosseini wrote his novel, The Kite Runner about Afghanistan, his birth country. He was trying to explain how Afghanistan isnt as horrible as the American media percieves it to be. Based on the experiences people go through, they will have different perspectives and views of atonement. Khaled Hosseini wants his readers to know what Afghanistan really was like before the war. People's idea about Afghanistan is based on what they see on television, which is terrorism and the production of heroin. During the time when Hosseini was living in his native country, people of all ages were enjoying life, making everlasting memories and not having to worry about taking cover when they hear a bomber plane over head. After the Soviet invasion, Hosseini fled the country and felt very guilty for leaving everyone behind because he felt as if he should be helping out. In the book it states, "I feel like a tourist in my own country." This shows how much Afghanistan has changed from once a wonderful country to a combat zone. What the media shows us now is not what Khaled Hosseini wanted us to see in his book The Kite Runner. Hosseini's perspective of abandoning his country and his people has given him his own view of atonement. Tim O'Brien was a soldier in the Vietnam war, it showed him how cruel this world really is. His novel, The Things They Carried shows the struggles soldiers went through on a day-to-day basis. He also expresses the importance of loyalty in war. It has given him a different perspective of life whereas a family living at home will take things for granted. His perspective of life will give him his own
