Through the Tunnel The story under discussion is entitled Through the Tunnel and is written by Doris Lessing. As for the writer I have to mention that she is a British novelist, poet, playwright, librettist, biographer and short story writer. Lessing often writes about personal and social turmoil and about the growth of individuals in a changing and often hostile environment. He meets boys who jump from the rock and dive through the hole under water to the surface. After exhausting training Jeremy manages to do it himself. The text presents partly a narration, partly a description of getting a target by a 10-year-old boy, in particular to swim under the water through the hole in the rock. Since the narrator of “Through the Tunnel” is omniscient the reader can see how determined and adventurous Jerry is. Jerry’s determination to go through the tunnel and his sense of adventure are much more obvious because the reader is able to know all of the facts and also the feelings of the characters through an omniscient narrator. The narrator highlights his tension desire to find something with the help of verbs of action “took a big chestful of air, groped over, shot his feet” and constant repetition of a word “again”. Then the narrator dwells on description of Jeremy’s careful
