Three Types of Homophonic Words of Network Language in China Introduction With the rapid development and the increasing popularity of Internet in China, network communication, a new communication mode, has been accepted by a growing number of Chinese people. During the communication, Chinese netizens reform some vocabulary in order to increase the efficiency. Then the network language occurs. Some vocabulary in network language completely does not accord with the standard expression of Chinese. As an emerging communication mode, network language has many vocabulary characteristics. This thesis will mainly analyze the features of homophonic words of network language in China to show the uniqueness of network language. Homophonic words in network are those new words that have similar pronunciation but different meaning compared to their original words. These new words which are more vivid than the original words will have stronger vitality through the great power of communicative function in network once they are accepted by millions of netizens. Homophonic words in network language mainly embody the following three types---the homophonic Chinese characters, the homophonic local dialects and the homophonic Arabic numerals. Ⅰ. The Homophonic Chinese Characters The Intelligent QuanPin Input Method, a primitive input method, contributes to homophonic Chinese Characters. This is because the lexicon in this input method is unable to display Chinese characters according to the frequency of utilization. For the sake of convenience, most netizens tend to choose homophonic words.
