During the periods of colonialism, military strength and more direct methods of control were used. However, as colonialism fell more and more in terms of moral righteousness, a new type of indirect control was created in the form of neo-colonialism. This is a major way in which superpowers now maintain their status. The US has been a global superpower for over five decades and has relied mostly on indirect forms of influence. One way in which the US maintains its influence is through its political standpoints and alliances, especially within IGO’s. The US is part of the UN Security Council and has the power to veto any decisions alongside Russia, China, the UK and France. As a result of this, these nations are the main decision makers within the UN. In other words, what they say goes. The US is also part of NATO which forms an alliance with most North Atlantic nations. With these alliances, the US is able to make decisions and spread its influence through multiple nations. The G8 is also an IGO the US is part of. This elitist group of eight are made up of prosperous nations which help determine and introduce policies that in turn affect others. It must also be said that the BIC nations are not part of this group which suggests that the G8 is simply a tool used to maintain the eight nations’ status and influence as they exclude other nations. A further point that can link to political maintenance of superpower status for the US is the factor of military. Although it is not the major factor which the US relies on for superpower status, it is a fairly big aspect. The US spends $450 billion per year on its military with approximately 1.5 million soldiers. China has roughly 2 million soldiers in its military but due to the huge investments in the US military, they are thought to have more cutting edge military technology as well as having full spectral dominance.
