This World Ain’t Big Enough For All Of Us
For the past 30 years, the threat of over population has been seen as the primary cause for shortages in food, raw materials, fossil and nuclear fuels, and the ecological systems of the planet which absorb wastes and recycle basic chemical substances.¹ There is no argument against the fact that humans are consuming faster than our Earth is able to replenish. However, is over population the primary reason behind the staggering increase in resource consumption? Those who believe it is every human beings responsibility to propagate within reason thus keeping human expansion at a sustainable rate, blame the impoverished masses for reproducing offspring beyond their means to sustain them. There is the argument that poor people in urban areas that have “litters” of children that are then supported by welfare programs are sucking the resources from society. However, wealthy people consume far more resources per person than poor people do.² Furthermore, the United States, being the richest nation in the world, uses well over half of all the raw materials consumed each year. That means less than 1/15th of the population of the world requires more than all the rest to maintain its inflated position.³ The growth of society dependents on agricultural production and is therefore limited, and over population in under developed countries contributes less to the consumption of resources than wealthy countries that require more.
According to an article titled “The Population Explosion is Over” by Ben J. Wattenberg, there is a significant decline in the total fertility rate. For example: In an industrialized country such as the United States, birthrates have fallen below replacement for 25 years. Besides a small increase in the 1980’s, birthrates have fallen 5 of the last 6 years. In the least developed countries the fertility rate in 1965-1970 was 6 children per woman.
