This is not the only definition of cultural diversity as different people have different perspectives. While some people define it as the access to life opportunities and allowances for public accommodation, others define socio-economic diversity as the affirmative action and social tolerance (Limbaugh, 2011). These definitions are affected by the history, behavior, language, values and beliefs, attitudes and other unique qualities that are used to define a given sub-cultural group or race
The practice of multiculturalism gives uniqueness and an essential component to benefit the country such as good public relationship. Apparently, multiculturalism is not possible without the participation and engagement of the people. Therefore, the practice of multiculturalism must be actively advocated and enhanced among the community. The world is changing rapidly, and it is very important for Americans to accept multiculturalism as an irreversible part of the United States. The country has a lot of different cultures.
A Question of Identity We, no doubt are aware that America is a melting pot of ethnic, persuasion and diversion. Americans often classify people by these measures. However, in certain circumstances these traditional measures do not apply. For example, how would one measure a Puerto Rican of Latino origin who possesses a “black as carbon skin”? (128) In America there exist a parody between skin color and ethnicity: race and ethnicity are often confused and creates questions of identity of the people subjected there under.
Formally, racial categories appeared to be biological which contrast with the view of the current generation that impact the social status of the society. The ethical race connections that exist among people appear to be mutually exclusive. However, the situation may be overlapping without notice. This brings in the idea of invisibility of race within the community. People tend to assume the existence of race as an inferior fact yet it exists as a major problem within the community.
Rainbow Metamorphosis: The Cultural Diversity of America Race and culture are abstract ideals that are interchangeably used to try to define who we are, but there is a fine line between race and culture. By definition, race is a class or kind of people that share common interests, habits and characteristics. Culture is defined as the customary beliefs, social forms, and material characteristics of a racial, religious, or social group. In America, the blending of so many cultures and races make the differences between the two even more obscure. There is still confusion, whether it’s deliberate or not, between the term Hispanic and Latino.
There are many similarities and differences between the two cultures. The impact of culture in healthcare is growing rapidly. It is imperative for providers to gain the skills needed to communicate with a culturally diverse group of people. Cultural diversity enhances the healthcare office just as it does to our country. Cultural values and languages are common difficulties by the provider.
This is due to their steady population growth, and most important of all, their noteworthy influence on American culture and way of life. Hispanics are a mix of European, African and Native American people, and therefore have a rich history which deserves to be preserved and appreciated. In order to understand the influence Hispanics have on the United States, we must first educate ourselves on their customs, morals, and values. Clothing, language, customs, and values all play a significant role in the Hispanic culture. People of all
Running head: Multicultural Concepts 1 Multicultural Concepts Chelsie J. Bonner ENG 157 July 21, 2014 Michael Cromwell Multicultural Concepts It’s evident that there are many different cultures throughout the world. Each culture has its similarities and differences. For example, a similarity would be the United States class system and India’s caste system. While it is a similarity because it shows the different classes of people, it could also be a difference because they are significant to the two cultures in different ways. Each culture has a similar structural system such as political, military, religion, and social structures.
I will also critically discuss the importance of social class in contemporary Britain. Identity is the way we look at ourselves and the way other people in the society look at us. This differentiates between each individual as identity takes in count gender, race, religion skin colour and family background. There is a lot of evidence that suggest ethnic identity is also very important as part of an individual’s identity, for example, African-Caribbean people find skin colour a very important source of identity (Modood 1997), there was also a study done which involved third generation British Asians the findings were that British Asians ‘adopt a ‘dual identity’, in that they inherit an Asian identity and adopt a British one’ (Johal 1998). Social class is a system of stratification, which refers to people being placed in different levels in society.
Race focuses more on skin color and appearance. In contrast ethnicity is based on where we are from and our origins. A person may be considered black if they are of a dark complexion or white if they possess a much lighter tone. This issue becomes more complex because people can be any color in between. There is also the problem that arises for example if a person is of either color but they come from a place such as Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic.
