The Subject of Order vs Chaos is somewhat of a cliche topic found in everything. It can be compared to good vs evil. Ralph represents the good in the world and Jack represents evil. With this topic, Golding describes the idea that all humans are inherently evil, by portraying evil actions done by Jack and his followers. Chaos and savagery come as a result of men trying to find pleasure without making sacrifices.
Iago from Shakespeare’s play Othello is also a power hungry villain who enjoys having people under his control, he is driven by extreme jealousy and the motivation, revenge. In order to accomplish these goals he manipulates his subjects in deceiving ways by utilizing their weaknesses against them. This differs from the Duke in “My last Duchess” by Robert Browning as the duke does not manipulate people in any way. Both Iago and the duke are driven by extreme jealousy to the villainous actions that they take. All three villains may differ in many ways, yet it seems they share a common urge for power, control and a use of sadistic measures.
Power Corrupts; Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely “Power is pernicious”, the old woman had said. She further added: “Even when we feel it will leave us scot-free, it lams us sorely and we are left fop-doodles in this harsh world.” Another man had said: “Power often brings a mint of money but with it we are rickety. It’s a meretricious thing, which often fools us.” Well, I have come to the discernible conclusion that power, instead of bringing joy and deliriousness brings woe and demise as it wreaks havoc through one’s soul. Power is basically a hidden form of death. We may go round our history books either lambasting or extolling powerful leaders, but we will always come to the conclusion that power does corrupt a man.
Iago who many people perceived to be an honest man when it couldn't be further from the truth and in Othello's cased it proved to be a deadly mistake for trusting him. It is very interesting in the way Iago was able to live such a drastic double life which I will explain in the way he did it by the way he presented himself, what made him so effective at manipulating people, why was his hatred for Othello so strong, and what do characters, besides Othello think of Iago. Iago was able to make create such an elaborate lie and execute his plan because of his pure hatred for Othello, this hatred was so great because there were multiple factors that were causing his ill will towards the Moor. Othello's appointing of Cassio as his lieutenant is what initially triggered these feelings towards him. There were several reasons Cassio's appointment enraged Iago to the point of madness, first Cassio was a Florentine and Iago found it despicable that a Florentine could and would be named lieutenant to the general of Venice.
It is the darker side that gives gleam to your personality. Robert Louis Stevenson had one major ambition, and that was to split these two characters apart as much as possible. Starting with Dr. Jekyll, who is this well respected, careful, admirable professional from an upper class family to this evil character Edward Hyde who is a deformed cruel, wicked murderer. When it came to comprehending the book I thought to myself that Mr. Hyde is the horrible, disgraceful being but then I realized that Mr. Hyde isn’t at all truly evil. In my opinion I feel that Dr. Jekyll is in fact the real corruption of all this.
Iago tells to Othello “every man who is married has an unfaithful wife. Every woman who is married is an unfaithful wife.” It may be true for some men and women but there could be some exceptions such as Desdemona. Iago tells Othello that it is better to know the truth, which Iago knows that it is not the truth. Iago speaks to Cassio, not about Desdemona, but about Bianca, because Othello couldn’t hear what Iago and Cassio said, but could only see Cassio’s face. He is convinced that Iago was speaking the truth.
Reasonable Eccentric Behavior of Dorian Gray . In the book, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian Gray is a handsome and proper man, but on the inside he is full of madness, guilt and misery. Initially he’s a melodramatic and petulant young man , but after realizing his true morals –his life skews toward the futile side. Instead of fixing his life, he lives for the pursuit of pleasure which makes him indifferent. Although his actions are very insane, they can be seen as rational to reader considering hedonism.
Othello Literary Essay William Shakespeare’s play Othello, showcases one of the most evil villains in literature: the manipulative and dishonest Iago. I will show how Iago is trusted and loved by many because he displays an outward show of loyalty and honestly yet in reality he has an ulterior motive of evil and destruction. Through his devilish ways, he gains control over Brabantio, Roderigo and Othello. Iago is the epitome of a narcissist and he brilliantly manoeuvres his victims in order to take control over all those around him. They become victims as they mindlessly follow him.
Throughout the play, he is manipulative, deceptive controversial, and often without a clear motive. It is because of this questionable personality and ruthless disregard of morals and honesty that makes Iago the most interesting character in the play. Iago is a heinous character and by no means halfwitted. His villainous character in accordance with intellect makes Iago a very powerful character. He exploits the advantages of passive aggressive manipulation, as a means of achieving so called retribution for Othello's overlooking of his promotion as lieutenant.
While it may seem, that the tragedy of Othello was caused by the evil villain Iago, I believe that he was not the only one to blame. Although Iago played a big role in destroying his enemy, it was Othello’s character flaws that led himself to his own downfall. It is because of Othello’s gullibility, lack of trust in others, insecurity, and jealousy that he becomes a victim of his own tragedy. Othello is a very gullible person, and it is because of his gullibility that he is easily tricked into this situation by Iago. There many points in the play that show just how gullible Othello is***He trusted Iago; even after realizing Iago had a “monstrous” plan in mind Othello still trusted him, in 3.3.106-107 Othello says “by heaven, thou echoest me, As if there were some monster in thy thought.” Othello suspects Iago of having an agenda, in 3.3.118-119 when he asks Iago why he is weighing his words so carefully before he speaks, “And for I know thou’rt full of love and honesty and weig’st thy words before giv’st them breath.” In this quote we can see that Othello is on to Iago, he realizes how careful Iago is and even gets the feeling that maybe he is hiding something from him but what does he do?
