Inside the society of Salem, you either abide by theocracy, God’s word and The Ten Commandments or you get excommunicated from the society. Maintaining a good reputation is therefore essential in belonging in the community. Trying to sustain a good reputation is seen mostly with Abigail Williams. Due to her deceitful and manipulative ways, it is essential for her to cover up any trace of wrong doing she has done to carry on a healthy reputation. It is evident she cares for her reputation as she constantly says things like “...There be no blush about my name.”(pg.20) and “...
H.L Mencken said that the average man doesn't want to be free , he simply wants to be safe.Yet there is no such thing as absolute freedom. There are always limits to what can be said and done. So it makes sense the average man would prefer safety opposed to this idea of “freedom” . Events like the shooting unarmed black youth and men , Attacks on charlie hebdo , and the infamous 9/11, we live in a world where we are so scared to even stand up for what we believe is “freedom” that we cover our eyes because we rather be blind than to see what the truth is. And thats because deep down we know truth is not pretty.
Most of the citizen listen to the governments idea if equality because either they agree with the idea of absolute equality or because they fear the government and they don’t want to have to face the consequences of rebelling against the governments harsh and oppressive ideologies. Equality may be achieved in the most literal form of the word, but it is achieved at the cost of freedom. Freedom is no longer in their society because they do not have the freedom to think any more, a prime example would be the “mental handicap radio” (464) that is places in George’s ear in order to distract him from his own thoughts. In Harrison Bergeron the television is used in order to essentially brain wash the citizens and to instill fear into them as well. The importance of the television is seen through out the short story by having the entire narrative taking place with both the main characters, Hazel and George, being in front of the television the whole time.
Written In Stone After reading the article “Some Moral Minima” by Lenn Goodman, I must admit that I agree that there are certain things that are flat line wrong. Living in today’s society with so many different cultures, religious and political beliefs we are bound to view some aspects of life differently. I must say however, some should never fall in that category. Genocide seeks to destroy a race, a culture even a class. Slavery allows one man to imprison another man that is his equal, to a life he doesn’t choose.
She will do what has to be done in order to preserve the endangered species that are unique to the Channel Islands. But through all that dedication Alma has a lot of self-doubt because she has so much power over these animals but even with all that power she doesn’t know what to do with it. We see her dedication when Alicia, Alma’s assistant questions her ways, “I don’t know why we have to kill everything” Alma loses hope that she hasn’t explained herself, “But that’s exactly wrong, don’t you see? Because we’re the ones who put the animals there, the sheep and cattle and pigs on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa, the rats on Anacapa and cats and rabbits on Santa Barbara, and it’s our obligation, our duty [to return these places to their original state by killing off the interlopers]”(103-104). But even with all the power she holds she still questions her motives and that is very ironic.
Women are considered second class citizens and have to serve their husbands and male children. Thankfully, female circumcision is something that has not been practiced in the world I grew up, but between 100 million and 140 million females have been circumcised worldwide in the name of Allah (Henslin, 289).Yet, female circumcision is not the only crime that has been committed in the name of God. Thousands of women are killed through lapidation and many become victims of honor killings that are done in order to restore the family’s reputation as being faithful. I believe that all the inequality, discrimination, abuse and violence that occur in Muslim countries and within families are not caused by the religion itself but by people interpreting religious scripture to their benefit and advantage. Furthermore, Islam being the youngest religion of the three religions discussed in the book, Christianity and Judaism had more time to grow and evolve and become more civilized religions.
In the Book “The Spirit catches you and you Fall Down”, the Lees family has problems with the American doctors because they don’t speak the same language and Hmong people are against using medicine. Especially when there may be a time when someone is about to die, and they can communicate but I think that using medicine is strictly against their religion. It depends on the situation if the Hmong would have to use medicine to cure what may be killing the person. It is uncommon for Hmong people to use medicine because it is against their
And, of course, even beyond the authority of the law, society may enforce codes of behavior simply through the power of its approval or its disapproval. Yet what teenager has not enjoyed the thrill of nonconformity accompanying socially unacceptable behavior, whether it comes in the form of purple hair, a pierced navel, or simply lighting a cigarette? Nevertheless, in most areas of life, adults generally are forced to conform to community standards of conduct, and while some people may find such conformity comforting, others find it irritating, even demeaning. History is filled with examples of conflicts created when individuals have felt their own paths blocked by the constraints of the
“Its your civic duty to serve our country” that’s what every American has ever heard but when is it our civic duty to sleep with one eye open? Since when is it right to hide a knife under your pillow? To be afraid of people who are supposed to be protecting you? Well that’s what’s going on in the United States army if its not enough that the people in other countries are getting raped like us but the fact that brave women who decide to fight for our country are getting raped and blamed for this every single day. Its against the military code of conduct to have any sexual relationship while over seas with anyone so when a women is raped most of the time the military personnel believe that it’s the women’s way of getting out of trouble for having sex since the penalty for any sexual relation ship is being demoted a rank, losing a stripe or being relocated.
Have you ever been an outsider, have you ever been discriminated about your race, ask about your stereotype over and over and over again. Well if you haven’t than lucky for you because people like me have been to that horrible experiment .You don’t understand what people are saying about you, do they really like you or just make you look like a fool, asking thing that you don’t want to answer.
