What do we mean by the theology of Marriage? We can approach marriage from very different angles like sociology, culture, history, and so on. However, our main approach here will be theological. By this, we mean to examine what Christian faith has to teach us about living out the sacrament of marriage. We want to show how Christian faith enriches and deepens our understanding of marriage. We examine how Christian marriage fits into the overall Christian vocation which we take on baptism. There is only one vocation and that is the baptismal vocation to live as members of God’s family. Marriage is one way of living out this vocation in practical terms. So also is the priesthood, the religious life, and the single life. They are all the same way of living out the vocation. In this course, our emphasis will be positive. We will see that marriage is a great vocation or in the words of Vatican II that is a noble vocation. The majority of people are called to live their life through this vocation, that is, as married people. We will come to see that the sacrament of marriage is not something vague but is very practical and concrete.
