Theater Is My Life

Theater is my life. First and foremost, I am an actor. I am a natural actor and to ask what skills I have developed in a theater class is a difficult question for me to answer. But, when it comes down to it, its not the subject matter that I have developed in this class, it’s the experience and the friendships. The three skills I’ve developed since the beginning of the year are leadership, persistence and adaptation. On regular occasion I’m put in charge of setting up for the beginning of rehearsals for the one act. I’ve had to cope with people always asking me where things go, or even with the fact that people don’t always want to help. I’ve had to learn patience and how to keep my thoughts organized. How to delegate multiple events/actions at once and know who to delegate these responsibilities to. This character has been a big struggle for me, because he’s such a foil to my personality. I’ve never been one to get very nervous. Very few times do I ever remember getting flushed or my breathing getting out of control. For Andrew, my character, its the exact opposite. He’s always nervous and this is difficult for me to portray. I’ve had to put a lot of effort into bringing this character to life. This is one of few character that I’ve had to seriously dedicate myself to becoming, instead of just flipping a switch and turning into Andrew. This endeavor has taught me the importance of persistence and not to give up. Well, more-so than I already understood. Last but not least, this class has taught me how to adapt. Be it through a difficult character, or through difficult classmates, I’ve had to learn that I’m not always in control, which is difficult for me. But this is a skill that I’m proud to have gained.
