The Whaler (An Irish short story.) The Whaler by Joe Sheerin, first published in 2000. The Whaler is a story about a young boy, who meets the idol of his childhood; the Whaler, but as they speak, he quickly learns terrible things that robes him of his innocence. It’s a May morning, the protagonist and narrator of the story is on his way back from grocery shopping for his mother. On his way he then meets the Whaler: ‘’It was the Whaler. The idol of my young imagination. One from the old tribe of gods; hero, magician and priest.’’(p. 1, l. 5). To the boys embarrassment his idol was defecating in the grass, and then cleaning himself with his right hand. They then start talking and the subject comes to Eileen Early, the boy’s teacher and to whaling. The boy who knows whaling by heart starts talking and asking about whaling. The Whaler then asks if he can keep a secret. As they stand the Whaler is significantly taller than the boy, the whaler then reaches out his dirty right hand making the boy promise to keep the secret. The Whaler had a softer handshake than the boy imagined a tough whaler would have. ‘’I never saw a whale in my life.’’(p. 2, l. 69) the man then says. ‘’Never saw a whale. The hero of my lonely stories. The harpoonist of my wild imaginations.’’(p. 2, l. 71). The boy then shockingly learns that the whaler not only wasn’t a whaler, but he was never even a sailor. He ran the St Lawrence seaway only. The whaler tells the boy that he saw the skeleton of a whale in a museum once, and that they weren’t as big as you’d think. The boy thought that a whale was as big as a hill near them, the whaler then asks what that hill reminds him of. The boy who thinks it looks like a whale is stunned to hear the whalers answer: ‘’Not a whale. A woman’s tit.’’ ‘’And then he drew the shape in the air with his bog hand as he spoke.
