While Alyson and Lynn stayed in 6A, Logan and Jason moved into the nearby Ronald McDonald House, a place to stay for families receiving treatment for serious illnesses. Two days before Christmas, Jason caught the Norwalk virus, throwing the whole process off-track as doctors kept him quarantined, waiting for him to recover. If Jason was no longer a suitable match—if his health wasn’t good enough or there was something wrong with his liver—the chances of finding another donor in time were extremely slim. Kemmerich’s mother is not convinced that Paul is telling the truth, saying, “I have felt how terribly he died. I have heard his voice at night, I have felt his anguish—tell the truth, I want to know it, I must know it” (180). Paul deliberately continues being vague in order to comfort his comrade’s mother. She is relentless in investigating her son’s death, pleading, “Are you willing never to come back yourself, if isn’t true?” and Paul quickly replies, “May I never come back if he wasn’t killed instantaneously” (181). My heart had sunk to the deepest part of the world. I felt as if he had left me in the world alone. His funeral was on a Friday that he was supposed to pick my sister and I up for McDonalds. My sister refused to go because she did not believe my mom. But I missed school to watch my best friend be laid to rest.
I didn’t say anything and just went straight to my room. I cried myself to sleep that night, as a matter of fact, I cried myself to sleep nearly every night for a few months, I was so sad and angry because I lost my sister and best friend because of my parents. After months the police were still without a trace so they decided that it was best that they closed the case. My parents weren’t happy with their decision but they didn’t get a say. He wasn’t going to stop for a long while but luckily, Pheobe cried enough that he finally stopped. After he was done with me, I had to calm Pheobe down because she was still crying. She really was.
