Film Reaction Paper: Twelve Angry Men Individual Analysis “You do not lead by hitting people over the head - that's assault, not leadership” –Dwight D. Eisenhower. This quote from our past president is a prime example of what leadership is, and in the film Twelve Angry Men, there are many different types of leadership displayed. The obvious leader at the start of the film was juror #1. The reason you can tell he’s the leader is that he starts off by saying “Ok men, let’s take our seats now!” He said this while he was standing up, so this gesture shows some kind of authority that he obtained in this group of jurors. Juror #1 essentially self-appointed himself as a leader to begin with, and one can say that he has the trait perspective of leadership, because it seemed like he was born with qualities to be a leader. The type of leadership throughout this 1957 film was task leadership. This is because the juror’s behaviors were all aimed specifically at accomplishing a group goal – to decide whether to boy is guilty or not for killing his father. Although the jurors did eventually come to a consensus, they did not balance out the participation between them. Different leadership perspectives were shown by different jurors. Juror #1 used initiation in the group because he got everything started and generated ideas from other jurors. Throughout the film, he would coordinate the group and help the group decide on when to vote. Juror #1 also challenged everyone to speak. This is an example of a trait approach to leadership, because he took on the role as a leader right from the beginning. This actually turned into a functional type of leadership; because juror #1 let other jurors take over as the leader. For example, the leadership transitioned to juror #8 when he started giving out information and the facts on the case. Juror #8 informed everyone about his thoughts
