He brings to light many truths not brought out in the American education system. For example, all school children are taught that John Smith’s life was saved by Pocahontas. But, it is seldom if ever taught that she saved john smith’s life twice. This discrepancy is one of the corrections that David Price makes in this book. To achieve his goal the author provides intimate descriptions of the primary individuals in the book and clarifies the relationship that the settlers had with the Indians in so doing he removes myths that surrounded the establishment of the colony.
Moreover, this creates the idea that war never truly ends as it is questionable that Elizabeth’s son may grow up to fight in a war. Therefore, showing that soldiers such as Stephen and wars such as World War One are no different from soldiers and wars today. This leaves an uncertainty next to whether or not society learns from its previous mistakes involving war. In addition, within the chapter of England 1979 the reader discovers, along with Elizabeth that Stephen ‘didn’t speak for two years after the war.’ This finding highlights the damning effects that war can have. Also, many of the other soldiers within the novel suffered from shell shock.
So, why do school boards choose to keep such books away from children when hundreds of other people say that these books have academic value? William Faulkner, for example, is an author whose books have appeared on the banned books list and have been challenged by a number of school districts. Yet, in most advanced placement classes his works are a required read. What is it that makes books such as his cause people to ban them? The novel As I Lay Dying is one of William Faulkner’s more famous works.
Journal 14-Famous Lincoln Civil War Speech & “Sivilizing Huck Finn” While I was reading Sutton’s article, I remembered Mrs. Phillips saying how that the regular’s English class just could not grasp that Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is in fact not racist. Apparently Sutton had not reached the sophomore honors English class level yet either, which is probably not the best, seeing he is a book critic and has the ability to edit, or in my terms ‘butcher’, books to his liking. If he had seen Twain’s purpose-to make the book as close to real life and society as possible to really emphasize the satire traits, Sutton might not have been so disgusted. It actually annoys me that he would change the whole book, and all of its
Name: Quy Pham Class: History 1302 Teacher: John Ryan Due Date: June 20th, 2011 Book Report of “Guarding the Golden Door” In “Guarding the Golden Door”, Roger Daniels attempts to trace the history of immigration in the United States from 1882 to the present day. Daniels is a writer and he is also a historian. In this book, with his brilliant writings and knowledge, he pointed out many interesting information about the immigration and immigrants from many countries around the world to the America. From the book, we can have some precise arguments about the immigrations: Because of religion, race or ethnicity these groups are too different, and therefore cannot be adapted into American culture. Immigrant groups, because of innate inferiority or prior cultural disposition, are not capable of self-government and are therefore a danger to our political institutions.
Harriet Beecher Stowe: Spokeswoman for Racial Inequality Andrea Reason Dr. Gerl ENG 365 February 24, 2009 ABSTRACT Harriet Beecher Stowe’s claim to fame came from her highly criticized novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. This paper discusses how it is and what it was that made Harriet Beecher Stowe write such a moving piece of literature. Harriet’s father always taught his children to be spiritual and create a sense of mission and purpose. Although she felt like she never could achieve his standards, she continued to pursue her duty of fulfilling a mission. This paper will focus on Harriet’s experiences that brought her to write the novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
When Doherty spoke to our class he said, “Replacements couldn’t keep up with casualties.” This problem led to another problem. Men that began training toward the end of the war would have their basic training rushed or cut short. When Terry spoke to our class he said, “Boot-camp changed from 12 weeks to 8. We were beat down but never got built back up.” It seems that our troops struggled to find an effective way to fight the guerilla warfare in Vietnam, “Walked around in circles. No strategy.”(Doherty) He also wrote in his book, “I was not going to try to win the war.
The previous four years were hell and people were worried and discouraged. The first few days were rough for FDR, “There is nothing to do,” he said, “but meet each day’s troubles as they come”. Some laws were passed against his wishes but he only signed them to get read of things he liked even less or to just avoid holding up other legislation. Roosevelt and his administrations early goals were to recover and relief the American society. They came up with the idea that through several expedients they could get the economy pumping again.
He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers. I denied it, but I told Jem”(Lee 99). Even though Atticus had told Scout to ignore everything bad that people said about him, Scout couldn’t help but put up a fight. Through the use of her characters’ actions, Harper Lee demonstrates what it takes to have courage, and what can be accomplished when having
Destiny Roberts The story “Rewriting American History” By Frances Fitzgerald is not really a revelation into the way history books have changed. She has made a lot of interesting points that the history books are now more diverse because lets face facts that we as a nation are now more diverse. What the authors have managed over the years to do is add all the history that has been made in the last sixty years, which there is a lot, and not have books that weigh a ton. This has caused problems but there are some ways to fix them. The problem is that the kids these days are learning our complete history.
