Alex Klug English 1118 Professor Flaig 10/24/09 Fortinbras’ Importance to ‘Hamlet’ In the story of Hamlet, both Young Hamlet and Young Fortinbras lose their father’s. Few years before, Hamlet’s father, the dead King Hamlet, invaded Fortinbras’ country of Norway and took territory from them by force. Hamlet’s father was later killed by his brother, Claudius, and assumed position as King as well as marrying the formerly widowed Queen Gertrude. Eventually, both Young Fortinbras and Young Hamlet avenged their fathers’ deaths. Young Fortinbras did this through asserting himself and his military to action, and invading the then troubled Denmark.
Amleth versus Hamlet Hamlet is a classic story written by one of the biggest authors in history, William Shakespeare. But it is interesting to know that Hamlet is based off a story written by Saxo Grammaticus titled Historia Danica. Even though both stories have a number of comparisons, there are also many differences. However, when choosing which storyline is better, the latter one wins. Hamlet has moments which catapult it to extraordinary drama, making readers, like myself, more eager to read along.
What political event does Horatio relate the appearance of the Ghost to? Horatio said that the king of Norway was killed by Old Hamlet (King of Denmark). Therefore the king of Norway’s prince is coming to seek revenge from prince Hamlet for his father’s death. This is why the ghost may be appearing. 12.
He believes that these occurrences follow the battle in which Hamlet killed Fortinbras, the rival of the late king. In this fight all the lands of Fortinbras were given to the king of Norway, and now the son of Fortinbras also called by the same name, has gone on a mission to recapture these lost territories with the help of his thugs. Barnardo concurred and said “Well may it sort that this portentous figure comes armèd through our watch so like the king that was and is the question of these wars.” Should these appearances be a concern? Well, Horatio for one said “A mote it is to trouble the mind's eye… as harbingers preceding still the fates and prologue to the omen coming on, have heaven and earth together demonstrated unto our climatures and countrymen.” This event concluded with Horatio deciding to tell young Hamlet
When Hamlet was brought to the same spot, the ghost of his father had explained to him how he really died. After Hamlet learned the true story he went mad but there were several other factors attributing to him dying besides revenge. King Hamlet was murdered by his own brother. Hamlet mourned the death of his father for quite some time. After two months had gone by his mother could not understand why he was acting is such a strange way.
He pops out of no where, and in the beginning, not saying a word. Finally, after appearing several times, the ghost turns out to be Hamlet’s dad, and tells his son he can’t rest in peace because he had been murdered. b. What disturbing political events happen in the background? Claudius had King Hamlet murdered and took over the throne.

Who is he? At the beginning of 1.1 we are at the Gun platform on the battlements of Elsinore Castle, it is midnight. There is confusion as Barnardo is coming to take Francisco’s shift on guard, it is dark and both are spooked of each other before assuring it is only themselves. Horatio is with Barnardo and Marcellus as they both asked for Horatio to stand guard with them to show them of this apparition they have seen the past two nights, though Horatio is sceptical of this “Ghost.” Horatio is one of Hamlets close friend. 3.
Like Hamlet, Fortinbras’ father was also killed, and his uncle took over the throne. Now, both countries have a prince who fell as if they were stripped from the crown. Fortinbras, unlike Hamlet, plays an active role in Norway’s government. In Act IV Fortinbras leads an army into Poland to take back what is rightfully his. However, in truth this was a plot of revenge for his father who was
