Revenge, is one of the major themes that have affected not only the reader but also the story lines of innumerable books written around the world. The thirst for revenge is a massive amount of anger induced into a person by a wrong doing of another which leads the person to the other either physically or verbally assault the other. It is one such theme that has played a vital role in these two plays. Oedipus Tyrannus is by Sophocles a Greek writer and Blood Wedding a Spanish play by Federico Garcia Lorca who himself felt the swords of revenge as he was assassinated. Both Lorca and Sophocles have used revenge as a tool in their works to and construct and interpret the storyline and the characters.
The desire for revenge, in my opinion, is based on the character of a person. The person maybe soft spoken or harsh and aggressive, but even the slightest ego or aggression can turn the whole character of the person around and the person is very much likely to take revenge either on someone else or even oneself. The desire for retaliation occurs out of jealousy and pride especially when social power or status is questioned. People feel much more offended when their powers and reputation are questioned, leading to the desire for revenge in any form.
Revenge is an emotion which is very effective in creating dramatic moments. Verbal assault is a method of revenge which has been very effectively used in both the plays Oedipus Tyrannus and blood wedding. Verbal assault is more spiteful as the words used may wound a man’s heart and it would be far more painful than physical assaults. As said earlier in order for revenge to take place there is always another factor which has created it. In Oedipus Tyrannus, Oedipus, ruler of Thebes shows his thirst for revenge on Teiresius, a blind prophet using a verbal assault.
