The things that bring us happiness are not for sale. Money allows us to live stress free lives and gives us more profound time. It also allows us to take control of our lives and have a more meaningful work experience. Maybe these are necessary ingredients in the recipe for a happy life. Wealthy people aren’t that much happier than the poor. Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert and Elizabeth Dunn and Timothy Wilson write in a paper titled “If Money Doesn’t Make You Happy, Then You Probably Aren’t Spending It Right”, published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology in March 2011, that the reason the correlation between happiness and money is modest at best is because people don’t know the basic scientific facts about happiness.
Happiness often comes from spending money on experiences. People are often happier when they spend money on experiences like vacations and concerts rather than things like clothes. A couple of years ago I was wondering whether to give my grandmother jewelry for her birthday, which she asked for or take her and the family for a trip. I decided to take our family on the trip and we had a fabulous time together.
Most of the time, some experiences are often much better than others. There are memories associated with experiences that continue to bring happiness long after the actual experience is over. People are happier traveling to holiday destinations than traveling in a car to get to work. If you are engaged in what you do; you will be a happier person. People who actually take the time out to enjoy their experiences are the ones who are happier in general. Social relationships play a strong role in our happiness. Spending money on others helps to improve social relationships. When you spend money on someone who you care about, it is with the intention of bringing joy.
