The Sun and Planets Our knowledge of our solar system is extensive. But it is far from complete. There are vast spaces that remain unexplored throughout our galaxy. Although there is still so much to learn about the solar system, we do have a lot of information. The majority of this information is specifically on the sun and planets. The solar system is made up of the sun and all other objects that are gravitationally pulled towards it. The Sun contains 99.85% of all the matter in the Solar System. The planets, which condensed out of the same disk of material that formed the Sun, contain only 0.135% of the mass of the solar system. All of these objects are all said to have been formed from the collapse of a giant molecular cloud about 4.5 billion years ago. The solar system consists of eight large celestial bodies that revolve around the sun and shine by reflected light. Out of these eight planets in the solar system the four innermost are; Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, which are considered the terrestrial planets. They are made up of mostly rock and metals, are compact and all have a surface resembling the Earth’s. The outermost planets are; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and are known as the Jovian Planets. These Jovian planets are known as the gas giants because they are all gigantic compared with Earth, and they have a gaseous nature. They are made up of helium and hydrogen and are much larger than the first four. Even though each individual planet of our solar system is important in its own way, they are all held together by the gravitational pull of the Sun. The huge mass of the Sun makes it unequivocally the largest object in our solar system. It has a diameter of 1,390,000 kilometers and has a temperature of 15.6 million Kelvin. One hundred and nine Earths would be required to fit across the Sun's disk, and its interior could hold over 1.3
