Where Have You Been? Where Are You Going? “Where Have You Been, Where Are You Going”, by Joyce Carol Oates is a story that depicts the struggle of a girl coming of age. It is quite a disturbing story that was written by Oates after a magazine article was released about a similar story regarding a serial killer. I think the main theme of the story is the sexual victimization that have been and are facing teenagers in contemporary society.
Throughout the majority of the book Walker shows sex to be seen as a form of aggression or something that the female is forced to submit to. Walker shows Celie to have gone through a lot of sexual aggression in her younger years and even in her married life. At the beginning of the novel, it is revealed that Celie is sexually abused by her ‘Pa’. The introduction to Celie’s life is very detailed and shocking, as the reader discovers the

The Whistleblower is a non-fiction story written by Kathryn Bolkovac and later made into a major motion picture by director Larysa Kondracki. Kathy’s character goes through enormous changes after witnessing hundreds of innocent young girls being tortured and killed. Kathryn Bolkovac starts off as an ordinary female police officer, and is then put through such an extraordinary number of psychological “games” that she becomes a much different person by the end of the story. According to her ex-husband, Kathy is married to her job. She is looking for a transfer so that she can move closer to her daughter whose custody was gained by her ex-husband.
Reviving Ophelia Abusive relationships are not only reserved for married couples. There are plenty of teens caught up in these dangerous situations, and like older women, the teenage girls feel they are somehow responsible for the abuse they suffer at the hands of the men whom they love and who supposedly love them. This phenomenon is common among abused women. They make excuses for the beatings they take and their abusers insist it will never happen again. And yet it does the cycle of violence never end.

On average, “...24% of women had suffered sexual assault after the military.” (www.salem-news.com) For instance, “Many [women] were gang-raped by their military “comrades”...”. Most of the time, when the women reported these attacks, nothing was done about it. The aftermath of the war was called for change. Women began wanting more rights, and nurses in the war were given those rights and were also rewarded for their services as well.
From reading the book and comparing it to class lectures, we are able to learn multiple things about slavery. Like many slaves, Celia was treated like an inanimate object. She was bought and sold, raped and impregnated just when she was a young teenage girl. There was only a certain amount of abuse she could take until she started to resist. First claiming to be sick and pregnant, Celia eventually full on rebelled and killed her aging master, Robert Newsom.
