Summer Reading Project 2013 The Subject of Rape in Young Adults This book has many themes and life lessons, but I choose the topic of rape because there are a lot of young women who have been raped and no one has heard their story. You may have heard Billie Holiday’s story or maybe Fiona Apple’s story, but I’m going to tell you about students that were raped and had a very difficult time facing their peers afterwards. Here is a story about a young girl who was raped by her boyfriend, and then her school put her dorm next to her abuser. This is the story of Landen Gambill who was raped by her boyfriend, then her school accused her of embarrassing her ex-boyfriend for telling her story when she didn’t even say his name. Her school, UNC, put her as close as possible to her abuser. Then they accused her of “embarrassing” the person who raped her. She spoke out against rape and won over the crowd of her area. That was the story of Landen Gambill. Here is the story of Oprah Winfrey. She had a difficult relationship with her mother. She received beatings from her grandmother, and suffered rape and sexual abuse as a child. She also had a baby as a young child, but lost it and thought to herself she had a second chance. She was sexually abused between the ages of ten and fourteen. She now owns her own show called the Oprah Winfrey Show and she also has her own TV station called OWN or the Oprah Winfrey Network. Now you know the stories of someone who is famous and someone who is not famous. The difference between the two is one gets more credit for the same thing that happened to them. Both people have the nerve to come out and talk about their experiences. Now one owns their own show and television channel, the other you never hear about anymore. Here are some interesting facts if you find yourself in a predicament. Yell and scream “Stay Away” and most rapists
