Because of his position of superiority, he viewed the peasants as inferior beings. Facing his son’s demise, Gaspard is shown “howling over it like a wild animal” (Dickens 84). This scenario establishes the idea commoners are regarded as non-human. Dickens describes the Monsigneur as having a “face like a fine mask” (Dickens 83). Portrayed as a man of fine face, the Monsieur lacks visible evidence of hardship unlike then peasant living in extreme poverty.
Priestley uses a range of language and theatrical devices to criticise the selfishness of people such as the Birling family. To begin with, Birling shows his lack of understanding and disrespect for the working class. This is show. When he says, "If you don't come down sharply on some of these people, they'd soon be asking for the Earth." This shows a lack of compassion by Birling, as he only cares about his wealth and status, and the profits he can gain from his factories.
An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestly has a very strong political message. It strongly promotes the idea of socialism where everyone works together in a community and responsibility is central. However in this play it is strongly contrasted with the idea of capitalism where each man has to work for himself. In Act One at the very beginning of the play Priestly uses the stage directions to show the very distant relationships in the Birling Family, he illustrates them as being prosperous by mentioning “dessert plates” and “champagne glasses” there is also a sense of distance between the family members as the set is “not cosy and homelike” and Mr. and Mrs. Birling are situated at opposite sides of the table. Priestly very intelligently uses light as a dramatic device when the family are together the light is “pink and intimate” making it seem a joyful, happy and warm atmosphere and then suddenly the light turns “brighter and harder” when Inspector Goole enters.
Even from the opening of the play the Birlings are presented as a selfish middle/upper class family with friends, Gerald, also of high class, so they fit their stereo type for their social status. One of the main methods priestly uses to present the selfishness of the family is dramatic irony; it is used throughout the play and in Mr Birlings speeches particularly dramatic irony is used strongly which priestly uses to show how selfish Mr Birling is and used to humiliate people like the birlings, and by seeing the birlings being able to relate to them and seeing how you really are. In the play we see sheilas lack of consideration for working class people we see this when she gets eva smith fired because she didn’t like the way she was looking
Glen’s quandary first results from his incompetence in the capitalist society. Glen represents working class men, the proletariat, “who, having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling their labor power in order to live “. Therefore, Glen suffers from exploitation of the bourgeoisie, the capitalist class. This is reflected in Glen’s petty wages, which cannot support his family’s already poor living standards. Even worse, despite being strong and skillful at manual labor, Glen, known for his “hot temper, bad memory and general uselessness”, is labeled as a counterproductive factor in the capitalist system.
The Devil which is a parallel to money is a motif so people such that in Tom's position, will borrow money from him. The Devil has essentially converted Tom into his spawn, as he is doing the same thing the Devil once did to him. The greed and money ultimately resulted in his death, and Tom's userer subjects led the end of their lives because of the debt they had to pay. The subjects indulged in the thought of free money, easily accessible money, ruining their lives, which is what the 'Devil' quiescently did to Tom Walker. This quote portrays the greed contained in people, "He was on the point of foreclosing a mortgage, by which he would complete the ruin of an unlucky land-speculator for whom he had professed the greatest friendship."
Where as all the nosey neighbors quickly interfere with phone calls and tea parties, Edward soon becomes a walking celebrity as he dazzles them with his talent on making there gardens, dogs and selves stunning with his hands, his scissorhands. Fame doesn’t change Edward as a person. He remains his self-conscious, loving self and through the blur of change he falls in love with Mrs. Bogg’s beautiful and delicate daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder). ‘Edward Scissorhands’ may have a tale of the original ‘Frankenstein’ but in my mind it has a twist of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Unfortunately, not everything can go well for to long, Kim’s threatened boyfriend, Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) causes trouble for Edward and a gossiping neighbor goes to far and rumors fly through the roof.
With a character like Lennie the reader couldn’t help but be drawn in by his loveable personality. The characters in the John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men signified the people of the 1930’s during the Great Depression. In the story the characters represented real people in society in the ways that Curley’s wife was ignored by the men, Crooks was discriminated against because of his race, and Lennie was misunderstood because of his intellectual disability. Throughout the novel, Curley’s wife was overlooked and disregarded by the men on the ranch due to her gender, just as women were in American society during the 1930’s. Curley’s wife desperately wanted to be acknowledged by the men when her husband failed to give her the attention she craved.
