The steps I have taken to change my consumer habits. Four years ago an eighteen year old girl entered the university that was not in her home town. Being a first year student she had to face numerous expenses, because she was just beginning her independent life – this is a routine matter when someone lives by themself. Students do not have their parents as a source of income anymore, so students have to learn how to organize their spending. Instead of managing money they are spending it on outside activities like going to clubs, drinking, and having parties. I was that first-year student girl. I wasted my money on silly things, buying clothes I did not really need and, as a result, I never wore them after. I spent money in a disorderly manner. Looking back, I understand now that the most important change in my consumer habits happened when I changed my attitude towards spending money. First of all, I had to change myself and to do that I needed to review my spending habits and the reasons why those habits had been formed. Very quickly I understood that there is no amount of money that is unimportant. Every cent is very important, and small sums of money can be transformed into large sums. I started to pay attention to the price of the products. I began to think more about how much I really needed this product. I was satisfying my desires at the expense of wasting money. It was very difficult for me to admit that I wasted money when I was unhappy. Sometimes when I got a bad mark in the university, or when I had a quarrel with my boyfriend, I thought it was necessary for me to spend money. I thought I would feel better. When I finally realized that “shopping therapy” had never helped me, I could save much money. I stopped making impulsive purchases. Making a list is very important for me now, because I do not want to buy things I haven’t planned
