Asia Dziuba Band The Soloist Steve Lopez, a Newspaper columnist portrayed by Robert Downey Jr meets and befriends Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, a homeless man living on the streets of Los Angeles portrayed by Morgan Freeman. Lopez is having trouble writing his column when he meets Nathaniel . Coincidentally, Nathaniel’s life is the answer to Lopez’s writing block. How did such a talented man end up homeless? Nathaniel Ayers came from a stable family and grew up a child prodigy, he played many instruments and practiced them daily for long hours. As he grew, so did his love for music. Soon his admiration of the art became an obsession. Nathaniel went to Juilliard School for two years before his mental illness took a negative toll on his life. Nathaniel Ayer is a paranoid Schizophrenic. Paranoid Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness in which a person loses touch with reality, has delusions and hears things that aren’t real. This made it hard for Nathaniel to function normally, it led him to drop out of school and turn to the streets since he didn’t know how to control it. Steve Lopez takes Nathanial under his wing and helps him get off the street and reconcile with family. The deeper message that the movie was trying to portray is don’t give up on your dreams. Nathaniel Ayers was in such an unfortunate position yet with a little help from his friend he was on track to being a respected prodigy. The Soloist matches the Learner Life’s value Compassion. Compassion is sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. Steve Lopez shows compassion when he helps Nathaniel Ayers, Lopez didn’t have to do any of the things he did. Lopez didn’t have to get Nathaniel an apartment, get him help or even continue speaking with him after he got his story. Yet he did, showing compassion to Nathaniel.
