The Significance of Sacrifice and its Character Building Qualities

In both the novels The Grapes of Wrath and Their Eyes Were Watching God the authors use sacrifice as a factor in shaping their characters to lead to and to support main reoccurring themes throughout the novel. John Steinbeck uses Rose of Sharon’s sacrifice that leads to her own self discovery overall to portray the forced growth of a character to parallel the hard times and to symbolize the saving power of family and fellowship. Zora Neale Hurston uses moral sacrifice through Janie’s many trials which also leads to her own self discovery to show the significance of love and relationships as oppose to your own independence. Both authors John use the common theme of sacrifice throughout the novel to shape their characters’ and lead them to their self discovery.
Rose of Sharon, a main character in The Grapes of Wrath, shows the sacrifice the Joads and the rest of the Okies had to endure.   In the beginning of the novel, her naivety is marked by a comment she makes while they are driving to California. She tells Ma of her and Connie's desire to live in a house with a white fence and have an icebox and go to the movies every day.   While Rose of Sharon's dream is ended by Connie's desertion what she describes is also the shattered dream of every other Okie family who came west in search of a better life.   Her loss represents the universal loss of many families.   Rose of Sharon is further humbled when she works in the field with the rest of the family picking peaches and cotton while pregnant. She is voluntarily risking the health and well being of her unborn child to help the health and well being of her family.
