At the beginning of chapter 9, Nick Carraway informs the reader upon the impact that Gatsby’s death and the ‘holocaust’-like aftermath of it has had upon him, through the quote "After two years," then, "I remember the rest of that day, and that night, and the next day". The days he is referring to are the ones after Gatsby’s demise – and how there was an endless flow of reports and policemen flocking to the mansion, creating a twisted, parodical version of his famed parties. However, it could be also considered not a parody, since the policemen and such care as much about Gatsby as his party-goers did beforehand – the sad truth of Gatsby’s life and the ‘American Dream’ as a whole. Nick, revealing his respect for Gatsby that has developed over the summer – showing character development throughout the story – worries that the reporters swarming the house care not about Gatsby and simply wish to turn his tragic death into a best-selling headline, filling their story with whispered rumours and degrading lies. Worse than this, Nick finds that nobody seems to be trying to validate or dismiss the rumours that are surrounding Gatsby’s death, finding himself alone as Gatsby’s only true friend –

When most Americans think of World War 2, they usually think of D-Day, or the pacific. When schools teach of it, they teach of the Maginot line, and the British efforts in fighting the Nazis, with a token reference to the Russian resistance in the east. This is ironic, as the eastern front had more casualties then any other country had in both world wars combined. The Eastern Front in World War 2, was one of the bloodiest, worst conflicts in history, both for the soldiers, and innocent civilians. World War 2 started off on September first of 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany.
The ending of World War One was such an event that gave a feeling of great relief over the countries of Europe. The population of Europe were at rest after so many years of fear and extreme hardship. However following these emotions of happiness, soon anger was expressed towards the countries which were seen as responsible for starting the Great War. The Paris Peace conference was an event which took place in the palace of Versailles. The conference was held over 12 months, 1919-1920, and intended to solve the disputes throughout Europe and relieve some of the anger.
The decision prevented millions of American casualties, millions of Japanese casualties, and served as a deterrent to the USSR expansion. The war in the Pacific had been raging for almost four years. The two battles immediately preceding the bomb decision were Iwo Jima and Okinawa; two battles where the Japanese fought to the death and the cost in American casualties was horrific. After those battles it was predicted that the invasion of the Japanese mainland would be even worse (51g. The Decision).
The Chechen War The War in Chechnya was a conflict between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. It was the first of two bloody wars and resulted in Chechnya's independence from Russia. The First Chechen War began in 1994 as an anti-colonial war for independence, but was later seen as anti-Islamic clash as the majority of Chechens were Muslim. The Second Chechen war began in 1999 because of several Chechen terror attacks on residential buildings in Russian cities that caused nearly 300 deaths. But the bad blood goes way back to Joseph Stalin, the premier of the Soviet Union who took over in the 1930’s.
