The Role of Media as Weapons of Mass Persuasion and Propaganda. Man can be influenced in many different ways, using the simplest techniques. Being influenced not only changes our perception but also helps us in making decisions in the future. But what tool is so powerful that it can order changes in the human thought process? The media has, and probably still is, one of the strongest “tailors” of human perceptions. Over the past century, there have been numerous people who have used the media to “attain” the trust of the people. However I strongly believe that this type of “alteration” is carried out with the hope of indoctrinating the mind of the helpless. The first way in which I think the media has become a tool and a weapon of propaganda is when we think of one of the gravest issues in the world today, terrorism. The rise of terrorism could have possibly been attributed to the role of media as well as the “names” we associate to the term. In many different countries where militants are “brainwashed” and “indoctrinated”, the process isn’t only carried out by some religious cleric. The religious cleric may be at the head of the hierarchy but there is always some way to depict the atrocities committed by the “enemy”. How is this shown to them? Pictures of their women being raped and their children being killed are only possible using media. The media needs to be regulated in this case and it is highly likely that the media has played a strong role in nurturing terrorists in the region. The media doesn’t only propagate the human mind like this. For example, during any act of war; it is always an aim to make our enemy seem like the “bad side” or the “unethical ones”.
