The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost This essay is on the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. I have had a difficult time interpreting many of the assigned reading poems and feel after reading this particular poem many times I have a slight understanding of what its meaning is. I feel that Frost leaves many hints and suggestions in this poem to guide the reader to its true meaning but in the end I believe he leave it up to the reader to determine what the poem means to them. Here is what I have interpreted its meaning to be. The Road Not Taken is based on a theme of choices. I believe Frost was faced with a decision point in where he had to choose which “path” to take. The “path” in the woods was not just that, but a path in his life which went two different ways. I believe he has come to a point in his life where he is forced to make a decision of which is the best choice. He ponders and has a hard time deciding which would be the best path. At times he believes one path is better than the other and then thinks both are about the same. He is ultimately forced to make a decision that will change his life. I believe nature was used because the choice he had to make was contemplated while he was walking in a forest or a similar outdoor setting. The setting in The Road Not Taken is in a forest in the fall season. This is determined by the first line “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood”. There are two roads, perhaps one is gravel and dirt and is worn. The other road is grassy and has not been taken before. I take the line in the poem “because it was grassy and wanted wear” as a temptation or choice the writer has faced before but has never taken. Both roads are described as being equally free of wear, one road grassy and the other covered with leaves. I imagined this setting as a beautiful autumn day with a slight chill in the air and absolutely breathtaking.
