Theme: REGENERATION and RENEWAL Ladies and gentlemen, are these the types of societies we want to live in? Let’s stop our agitated lives to consider this. I am sure many of you have asked yourselves the same question, while others might think: “Well, this is the society I have got”. It is quite true, but if we simply accept this fact, we will never take actions to change our conditions and will get nowhere. We are living through a period in which there is a break in society’s fabric that screams for regeneration and renewal of our reality. Home education, the first one we receive and is given to us by our parents, has impoverished as a consequence of the deterioration of the relationship between parents and children. Respect and values seem to be ancient words, not attitudes. They have lost their true meaning, being replaced by media mandates and fierce individualism. People feel isolated in their own neighbourhood. The basic bonds of a community are being tested every day due to the lack of social cohesion, resulting in indifference and moral insensitivity. Today we are almost disgustingly numb to violence, unless it touches us closely. Crime has risen and corruption has plagued the moral roots of society. Attacks, robs, frauds, rapes and murders hit the headlines of everyday newspapers. Drugs and alcohol are huge permanent social threats. People, especially youth, resort to them to fill in their lacks and cloud their minds, when what they really need is human empathy, company, and support. Love can overcome any obstacles, attaint wellbeing and even uproot hate. Being the family the social unit per excellence, the regeneration can only come from recreating the moral authority of parents. They are key factors in the rehabilitation of family. They must play their role, teaching with their actions, instead of misbehaving and applying a “laissez-faire”
