The Red Convertible “The Red Convertible”, by Louise Erdrich, is a short story about Lyman and Henry and their bond as brothers. Lyman also remembers the memories between his brother, himself and a red Olds convertible. As the story goes along, Lyman also describes the changes that bring to his brother after entering the military. In the beginning of the story, Lyman and Henry purchase together a red Olds convertible. The car is excellent and in good condition. Although it’s not clearly state din the story, the brothers drive the car on summer road trip all over the country including Alaska and back. “We’d made most of the trip, that summer, without putting up the car hood at all. We got home just in time” (360). It proves only how durable and efficient the car they buy. Aside from the condition of the car being very well, the relationship that Lyman and Henry is strong as well. “We went places in the that car, me and Henry. We took off driving all one whole summer” (359). The whole trip is attest on how content they are with each other. They stop and enjoy their freedom on the road and love every minute of the trip together as brothers. “ Some people hang on to details when they travel, but we didn’t let them bother us and just lived our everyday lives here and there” (359). They truly enjoy each other’s company and show how they had a blast on the road trip in their red Olds convertible. The car and roundtrips seals their bond As the story goes along, Lyman and Henry come back from the road trip. Henry is asking to do some off training camp and the next thing they know, Henry is away at war. Henry is draft into the Vietnam War and been prisoner of war for 3 years. Lyman write several letters, but Lyman receives 2 letters from him. Lyman states: I wrote him back several times, even though I didn’t know if those letters would get through I kept him informed
