He is looking at each soldier, everyone with a different injury and becomes resentful of the men. He begins to think that a wound is something of "a red badge of courage," to show to others that only the courageous survive and can walk with pride and valor. Fleming meets a soldier who's name becomes the " tattered soldier," who has been shot twice and speaks with great flamboyance of his regiment not fleeing during the heat of the battle. The soldier begins to ask Henry where he is injured, a mixture of this and his "arrogance" leads Henry to wander to a different part of the column where he sees his friend Jim Conklin deathly wounded. They do not ever want to show fear. Even after the war, the men still carry the grief of the war. Tim O’Brien carries the image of the young man that he killed, and it haunts him every day. Jimmy Cross tells Tim that he still has no forgiven himself about Ted Lavenders death. “At one point, I remember, we paused over a picture of Ted Lavender, and after a while Jimmy rubbed his eyes and said he’d never forgiven himself for Lavender’s death.
This incredible war story shows us that, even though they display great bravery and valour in battle, the only thing young men who fight in wars accomplish is an early death. The novel talks about many soldiers dying. So many of these soldiers are dead, that in the trenches they can smell the stench of rotting flesh, as the dead men often do not get buried. Those young men lying out in No Man’s Land, unburied, all went to war for the same reason, to prove that they were brave, not cowardly, and to fight for their country. All they end up doing though is becoming another casualty, another statistic, dying in a war that had no real reason.
The Heroic Coward Throughout the story The Red Badge of Courage by Stephan Crane, the actions and attitude of the protagonist, Private Henry Fleming constantly change. In the beginning of the book Henry would be considered a hero for enlisting in the army. In the middle and the end of the book Henry changes from a hero to a coward. He continuously ran away during the battles and he also fakes an injury in the attempt to receive a Red Badge of Courage. First Henry decides to enlist into the army which takes place in the first chapter of the book.

In the beginning of the film, the young men are being talked into going to war by a professor. The men are, at first, unsure of going to war but the professor feeds them lies about how war makes you a hero because you fight for your country. But throughout the movie each one of these men dies; and as they die, they are no longer remembered just forgotten; their bodies lying in the middle of nowhere. At one point in the movie, as Paul comes across a French man he gets frightened and he cowardly stabs him.
Although O’Brien is unclear about whether or not he actually threw a grenade and killed a man outside My Khe, his memory of the man’s corpse is strong and recurring, symbolizing humanity’s guilt over war’s horrible acts. Norman was right on the side of him when he died, after about a couple of years passed by after the war he was in Kiowa home town he started crying because he didn’t do anything to try to save him. In Fallen Angels Richie see’s how almost his whole team died he and Peewee were the only ones that survived, which emphasizes the theme of youth and innocence. In calling the novel Fallen Angels, the author implies that the soldiers’ youth and innocence are more important than any of their other aspects, such as their religion, ethnicity, class, or race. They wanted them to know what war is really like and wants to help them understand what is experienced.
They do not want to communicate with each other. They quarrel. Then it evolves into violence. Nevertheless, a midnight run to Gettysburg changes the situation. Boys are woken up, sleepily with eyes half-closed at 3 am, ordered to run to Gettysburg, a place that buried 50,000 men who died in America Civil War, and that is where they learn a profound lesson from Coach Boone and reflect on themselves.
Nobody likes the war and nobody wants to fight but for some reason the world had a problem and it needed to be fixed. The war has its positives but there are a lot more negatives such as, the draft, people leaving their family, death, etc... The point that rash tries to prove about the war in this essay, is when the farmer talks about losing his own boy in the war. “He fought for Mr. Lincoln do he?” the boy asked “not no more” the farmer replies. Whether the farmer is an antagonist or protagonist in this story, Rash still portrays him to be sad and pissed that his son died in the
“what passing-bells… for these who witnessed it”. Through the use of alliteration, soldiers were dehumanised and their parents had no loved ones to comfort them and mourn for them. Moreover, due to the enormous amount of soldiers dying they “didn’t have enough bells” to mourn all their children which depicts such a tragic loss on a huge scale. Owen puts forward the things the soldiers had to go through and how that resulted in their death or illnesses after being dehumanised and if they survived, when they returned home from the war. The feeling of paranoia and depression has caused the decrease of the soldiers’ emotional wellbeing.
This can be interpreted as Owen attempting to illustrate the voice of many soldiers, through a poem. The line, “…Waiting for the dark” indicates that soldiers were simply waiting for death to come, either because they were critically injured, or because they were waiting to go into battle. Another interpretation of this is that soldiers cannot bear the day, as the sight of their injuries, and their comrades’ injuries is too big of a strain for them, therefore they would rather choose isolation over companionship. The rest of the first stanza, Owen describes how war had changed everything. He writes that “voices of boys rang saddening like a hymn” which indicates that laughter of children saddens him as he isn’t capable of laughing, because of the war.
