The Quran has a unique place in Islamic life and theology. Discuss. “Read in the Name of your Lord”.1 These were the first few words of the Qur’an revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over fourteen hundred years ago. Muhammad, who was known to have been in retreat and meditation in a cave outside Mecca.” (Tzortzis, Hamza, A.) Quran is the book of God for those who are practicing Muslims. The writings in the Quran were revealed to the prophet Muhammad. As stated by John Esposito, “The Quran consists of 114 chapters of 6,000 verses, originally revealed to Muhammad over a period of twenty-two years. It is approzimately four-fifths the size of the New Testament, and its chapters are arranged according to length, not chronologically. The longer chapters, representing the later Medinan revelations, precede the shorter, earlier Meccan revelations to Muhammad ” (Esposito 2010: 17) The basic message communicated through the Quran is monotheism: to worship the one and only God. This message is communicated through the bible in the Christian faith but is particularly strong in Islam. Messages from God in the Quran are held in the most high esteem in the Islamic faith and Muslims are adamant about upholding the laws laid out in the this sacred text. “This [Quran] is a Message for humanity, in order that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is but one God, and that those of understanding may take heed.” (Quran 14:52) Islam translates as “obedience” and Quran as “recitation” (Burke, T. Patrick. 1996: 243) and it is by the in depth laws laid out in the Quran that Muslims live their lives. The Quran for Muslims is not merely a book of laws and verses to be recited but “a miracle of beauty and inspiration, the only miracle to which Islam lays claim.” (Burke, T. Patrick. 1996: 243).
