The Portman Hotel The Fundamental Attribution Error- In the Portman Hotel there is a clear example of the Fundamental Attribution when one supervisor explains the impact of the Floaters by saying that, “With floaters, we lost team loyalty. The floaters generally care less. They also have a harder time, they can't find things, and they forget what floor they're on.” The main error here was made when the supervisor claimed that the floaters care less. The fact that there was a lack of trust from the permanent PV to the Floaters meant that the lack of trust was towards each floater was brought on because of the position they had been placed in. The Fundamental Attribution Error is defined as people’s tendency to blame someone else’s behavior on their internal characteristics rather than considering the external factors such as their environment/situation. The floaters were labeled as careless and disloyal through people’s eyes even though they never considered that the reason that every single floater seemed to be disloyal and careless stemmed from the way their position was assigned. The floaters weren’t able to build the strong relationship with the guests that PV’s were able to since they never spent the necessary amount of time. Every day for the floaters was different hence they experienced the same problems that the hotel and PVs themselves had faced in the first few months of operation when there was no assigned floors or teams. Work habits between the permanent PV and the floaters were never given enough time to be understood so the floaters were probably seen as lazy if they didn’t do a certain task as was expected from the PV.
