My 14 years in the U.S. Navy as an active duty has shaped and changed my life in many different ways. After I graduated High School in the Philippines and migrated to United States, the support and assistance of family was there but the reality of life opened my mind in different perspective in life. To face the obstacles and challenges waiting on my path ahead, joining the Navy was my best option. The immeasurable experience and lessons in life that I gained through the military service prepared and molded me to the person I become now. One change the military has had on me is the discipline on time management. The transitions from high school life to American life to military life forced me to pay more attention on time. Every seconds count to have a productive day in the military. Detailed monthly, weekly and daily planning had to be executed effectively. Prior to entering the military, time management was one of my weaknesses, being young, I was always thinking that time was on my side, I had all the time in world and that planning and managing schedules and time were only applicable for company CEO or businessman. In the Navy it is not that simple as I thought. Every week has plan of the week for training and qualification, every day has plan of the day for equipment maintenance, and almost every three months has some type of inspections or assessment. Failures of completing qualification, performing maintenance and passing the inspections will result extended working hours and extra military instructions. As a young sailor and a low ranking person, doing the work and completing the assigned tasks was my only business. As my rank goes up and holds the supervisory position, it gets much harder than just doing the basic job without performing some kind of time management and planning for the day.
