The Other Son The film The Other Son tells the story of two young men from conflicting religions that discover they are switched at birth. In the film Joseph Silberg, born and raised by Israeli parents discovers that he is actually not his parent’s child, but switched at birth with Yacine Al Bezaaz, a child from the West Bank born and raised by a Palestinian family. Throughout the course of the film we are taken on the journey the boys go through after learning such devastating news. Accepting who they are and the religion they actually come from is a challenge they both go through after hearing the truth about their lives. Throughout the movie the director uses elements of the mise en scene, themes as well as motifs such as the diving wall, religion, language, music, and camera shots, and shadows in order to bring together the two opposing families. The dividing wall is what sets up the story line of this film. The wall is constructed by the IDF and divides the West Bank from Israel. It was made to prevent suicide bombers and other terrorists from entering Israel. Not only is this wall a psychical barrier between the two cultures and religions but it also acts as a symbolic divide between the Israelis and Palestinians. The wall further represents the automatic tension between the Silberg and Al Bezaaz family. Yacine’s brother Bilal is the character with the most hatred towards the Jews; he represents the divide more than any other character in the film and his struggle to accept his brother’s new identity is harder than that of his own parents. The use of religion as a motif plays a huge role in the lives of these two young men. Unlike the psychical barrier of the wall, it is a major divide between the two groups.
