This region of land has been set aside for the purpose of a wildlife reserve for the protection of many species of animals occupying the land. However, this region is thought to contain over ten billion barrels of recoverable oil, making it an interest to many for the development of this land. The decision to extract the natural resources has been fought over by many, making it a highly controversial topic. Drilling in ANWR is a controversial issue having pros that include the America’s dependency on foreign oil being lowered, no negative impacts on animals, and only a small portion of the area would used for exploration. Cons on the subject include the wildlife and environment being hurt or disturbed, the oil not being ready to be used for many years and not knowing the exact amount of oil present, and that it would be very expensive to do and the amount of oil believed to be found in ANWR is relatively small compared to the needs of America.
(Source 1/3) The 16 billion barrels of oil that lie untapped there would be more than enough to replace the oil Americans would purchase from Iraq for over 58 years. (Source 6/2)With our growing dependency on foreign oil increasing more and more every day, we can not afford to wait any
While it is true that Earth has benefitted from past space exploration, it remains very important for the leaders of America to weigh the pros and cons of further exploration. They must take into consideration today’s economy and the fact that many people are much more concerned about their jobs here on Earth, rather than worrying about exploring other planets. American exploration of Mars began in the late 1990s, and since that time, the United States has sent eight different vehicles to the Red Planet (Kluger 24). All of this exploration has been very expensive for the American taxpayers. Recently, the idea of privatizing the business of sending cargo and astronauts into low-earth orbit has become a reality.
1. Should oil and gas companies be allowed to engage in fracking, or should the United States ban the practice? There are, as always two sides to every issue and this is no exception. The benefits to business and the oil industry in the United States due to fracking would put us at a distinct advantage in this market that has made us dependent on foreign oil companies for decades. Along with a possibility of creating a large job market here in the U.S. with upwards of 600,000 people needing to operate this endeavor, we could take back our economy.
Although we may be able to sustain a planet with some kind of civilization, the earth that we knew is gone. Oil and fossil fuels are attributed to manual labor and why we are prosperous and why our economies have grown. It is also why we have global warming and acid oceans. Rising temperatures and depleting oil reserves go hand in hand. Modernity may cease with global warming as half the biggest companies are oil companies, and oil is the essence of life.
This is not the oil they are pumping out of Texas or the Middle East; it is dirty oil that has to be extracted and cleaned. This new process takes research, time and money to be successful. Even then it will still take a lot of man power to run all the equipment, which is an additional cost that I’m sure the consumer will inevitably be burdened
Bobby Carl Neal Peters English 102 26 April 2012 What a Fracking Opportunity The United States has an energy problem. We are dependent on Petro-dictators for the energy needed to fuel our economy. But recently, due to a new technology called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, new estimates of accessible natural gas reserves have increased dramatically. Used throughout the United States and worldwide, this process has profitably unlocked Trillions (emphasis added) of cubic feet of natural gas here at home in just the past few years. Concern about this new technology spans the political divide.
With technology that runs the life’s of millions, and the constant need to obtain anything and everything without a price, Lao-Tzu would hang his head in shock at the life we have grown so quick to know. There are places in the government and in the life of today that Lao-Tzu would think inadequate for living; however, we must look at what in our life meets his guidelines as well. Modern American society is not perfect. The ways of the world have changed since 6th century BC and life has become much more complicated all the while striving to make things simpler. The way technology has driven the last half of a century has changed life astronomically.
Should the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge be Opened to Oil Drilling? Wendy Cubos SCI207 Instructor Shannon Corona January 22, 2011 During the entire history of technological development and progress there has always been a battle between technology and the state of the natural world. It is no secret that through the search for and generation of energy, starting in the industrial revolution, has had dramatic negative effects on the earth. Global warming, de-forestation, and the extinction of many species have been only a few aspects of these. As the population continues to grow, so does the need for energy to support that population.
Oil is the God of Earth and we don’t even know it. Everybody in the world or should I say most of us are too dependent on it. Oil is good and bad at the same damn time. Oil is good because everything we do today we wouldn’t or couldn’t us it without oil, such as agricultural advances, if we didn’t have these advances we could still be living in the past. Five hundred years ago we didn’t have cars hair products or cooking oil.
