According to The Free Online Dictionary, the definition of the term “counterfeiting” is the process of fraudulently manufacturing, altering, or distributing a product that is of lesser value than the genuine product. Therefore, it may include copyright violations, as well as brand infringing goods. Counterfeiting also includes the copying of the labels, the packaging and any other traits of a certain product. Nowadays, counterfeit goods are a global public health problem; for developed, developing and underdeveloped countries. They are easier to find and are becoming more and more accessible to the populations around the world. This research paper will be about the people who are affected by counterfeit goods and if they are affected positively or negatively. It will also include strategies on how to spot a fake. Counterfeit goods can be hazardous not only for the health of the buyers but also for the health of the producers. Also, these counterfeit products play a huge role in the economy of the country. The Effect of Counterfeit Products on the Consumers Counterfeiting is usually seen by societies as a victimless crime with product imitations which are simply a cheaper alternative to the real products. What the societies are unaware of is that they constitute the majority of the victims. In the First Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting, it says that the companies and industry associations report that the quality of the packaging that the counterfeiters use is also improving, hence making it more difficult for both the enforcement personnel and the consumers to recognize the difference between the real and the fake products.
