THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INVENTION OF THE 1980’S There were many significant innovations and inventions of the 1980’s but there can only be one greatest invention and through my research I discovered that that was by far and undoubtedly the invention of Windows 1 which was released in November 1985. The invention of Windows by Bill Gates of Microsoft allowed America and other nations all over the world to access computers and opened the doorway for the personal computer in every home. Windows brought the icon to the desktop and allowed the running of mini programs to begin by simply clicking on its icon. To open another screen the user simply had to click on that other screens icon. This type of use made learning Windows both automatic and enjoyable. Before the invention of Windows, only computer people or really technologically savvy people were able to use computers. You had to be a computer programmer to understand or use personal computers. Windows 1 and later versions of Windows changed all that (Geier, Eric. "A History Of Microsoft Windows"). By using a computer mouse and clicking on icons a user could run programs. This made computers very friendly and improved greatly on the user-computer relationship. Now computers could be used in every aspect of life. According to Shelly O’Hara in "Fifty Things You Must Know About Windows" by 1990 because of Windows and later versions of Windows 75% of all American homes owned a computer. As I discovered in “Through the Decades” by Stuart A. Kallan the accessibility of Windows has made learning and becoming familiar with computers easier for people or users of all ages.
