Mike Schaefer 4/27/11 Duprey Persuasive Essay #2 BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY Intro: • Who ate breakfast today? (what did you have, etc.) • How many of you eat breakfast on a regular basis? • For those who don’t, why not? • I’m sure everyone has heard the phrase, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” but not everyone knows why. • Today I’m going to explain: o why it’s the most important meal of the day, o inform you of the consequences that come with skipping breakfast o and lastly I’ll tell you all some effective ways to squeeze a healthy breakfast into your busy morning. 1st Point: Importance • Do you guys know why it’s called “breakfast?” • The period between dinner and breakfast is considered “fasting” because it’s a reasonably long stretch of time between meals and the body doesn’t consume anything while sleeping. • Eating after sleeping is VERY important. It “breaks” our fast, hence why it is called “breakfast.” It has nothing to do with taking a quick break, despite what some people may think. • After getting a good night’s sleep, the body is rested and now needs fuel to start another productive day. • By eating in the morning, we “kickstart” our metabolism, which helps burn calories throughout the day. We burn calories while we sleep, so after waking up, the body needs more calories to use as energy for the day. • The burning of calories is what gives us our energy; if there are no calories to burn, where are we getting our energy? • Without that initial morning meal, our bodies are still asleep, trying to preserve the few remaining calories from the night before until the next meal comes around. • And typically when we don’t eat breakfast, we’re starving by lunch right? •
