From this, it is clear to the reader that Blumenthal believes that being alone is painful and controlling towards you. In the following two stanza's, Blumenthal brings the change of marriage into a person’s life, describing "a man or a woman" who "holds their arms up to the ceiling beside you" which makes you finally to take a rest and feel the "relief of respite". This gives connotations to the reader that Blumenthal believes marriage is idyllic as it allows a person to share the weight of their problems with someone who truly appreciates them and will do everything possible to help them. This consequently accentuates that Blumenthal feels it is essential in finding a partner in life to ease the burden. The metaphor "the blood flowing" represents the heart which is a symbol for love implying that without marriage there is no love and you have to have love to survive.
I believe that Relationships are the connections between people which can be expressed in many different ways or situations. In the poem ‘manhunt’ by Simon Armitage he explores the relationship between a wife and her husband, whom is an injured solider who has returned from war. In nettles, the relationship is between a farther and his son who has fallen into a "bed of nettles." Both poets show the consideration felt by the reader of the poem for the other person in the relationship. In the manhunt, the narrator’s consideration is for the mental suffering which her husband is suffering.
Elizabeth Jennings’s ‘One Flesh’ presents the relationship through a daughter looking back at her parents’ behaviour towards each other. Ian McMillan’s ‘04/01/07’ presents the reaction to his mother’s death. In this essay, I will analyse and compare how the poets present their attitudes to relationship by looking at the structure, imagery and the use of senses in the poems. Looking at the structure of the poems, Jennings and McMillan use different techniques to present their attitudes to relationships. McMillan uses the form of a sonnet, where the iambic pentameter rhythm imitates the regularity of the heartbeat, which shows the love towards his mother and the physical intensity of his reaction to her death.
Comparing ‘The Manhunt’ and ‘Quickdraw’ The themes of the poems ‘The Manhunt’ and Quickdraw’ are about love and heartbreak. Both ‘Quickdraw’ and ‘The Manhunt’ explore themes of relationships and mostly rejection. In both poems, emotive metaphorical language is used however there are some differences for example in ‘The Manhunt’ the form is more like a list as compared to ‘Quickdraw’ which is more like a story/narrative. Also ‘Quickdraw’ conveys damage and she wants to cause the man pain compared to ‘The Manhunt’ which conveys damage that is already done. However, ‘The Manhunt’ focuses more on explaining the damage caused to the veteran.
He quickly begins to mention how short life is even referencing her ‘preserved virginity’ being taken when she’s dead as ‘worms shall try.’ He finishes by focusing on the present and telling her to make the most of the time that they have now, which hints at the use of sexual innuendo. The speaker presents an argument in these three parts, however there are several layers of meaning to this poem. To his coy mistress is a poem, and ghazal is an ancient poet form often used to explain the beauty and pain of love. ‘If you are the rhyme and I the refrain,’ this is use of music to describe to describe fate and the feeling of eagerness is unnecessary as she is aware that when the time is right they will become one with each other. It also has several forms of sexual innuendo similar to ‘to his coy mistress’
The third reason is that a wife listens to her husband but has no complaints about her duties. She will listen to her husband when he feels the need to explain a rather difficult point or will type his papers when he has written them. The fourth reason is that a wife can take care of her husband social life. When she goes out with her husband’s friends, she will do the babysitting arrangements or when he invites his friends to come over his house, she will take care of the needs of his guests to make sure that they are comfortable. The fifth reason is that a wife can satisfy her husband sexual needs.
“My Mistress’ Eyes” “My Mistress’ Eyes” is a poem in which the speaker discusses his attitude toward his mistress and how she looks and feels about her. The speaker in this poem is a man because he describes his mistress looks. The poem could be addressed to his mistress in an ironic way or to his friends or family to prove a point. There is no setting that is being stated in this poem. The poem was written to maybe show his friends and family how his mistress doesn’t seem too pretty or feminine but he loves her in the end and that’s all that matters.
In “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which is an abstract diction and has deeper meaning lying inside it, the poet gives us a beautiful image by explaining different views in the poem .However; we can see the beauty of his art by understanding the deeper philosophical meaning beneath the poem. The poet used personification, metaphors, symbolism, synecdoche and refrain to compare the cycle of nature with cycle of life. The main message of this poem tells us that with all the different effects that we cause to nature, eventually nature will dissolve us, our experiences and ideas and continue on its path. The Persona in this poem is the poet himself who gives us different images from a town and it’s sea shore .In the first line of the first stanza “The tide rises, the tide falls “(l.1), the poet is talking about a repeating cycle in nature. By paying close attention, we see that at the end of all three stanzas in this poem, Longfellow used refrain by repeating the same line.
