The Managerial Impact of Delivering Bad News Team D: Johnathan Bishop Ginny O’Hara Professional MBA Program University of Mississippi The Problem Delivering bad news to employees, or to anyone, can be a difficult chore to handle, and some individuals are better equipped to handle this task than others. For a manager that has to impart bad news to an employee(s), the effects can impact on both personal and professional levels. For this report, we look at the areas of a manager’s life that can be affected by delivering bad news, including actual physical phenomenon that can arise from not properly coping with both the delivery and acceptance of bad news. We next look into the different methods successful managers use when approaching situations dealing with bad news. Lastly, we outline steps that can help managers plot successful courses of action when dealing with situations that involve the delivery of dreaded information. Effects of Delivering Bad News In a survey done by the Anxiety Disorder Association of America, 81% of the people surveyed said that workplace stress interfered in their relationship with their spouse/significant other and over one-third said it affected their relationship with their children. In the same survey, 50% cited staff management and 49% cited dealing with problems as the source of job related stress (Greenberg, 2006). We will first discuss the physical affects delivering bad news can have on a manager and then we will discuss the emotional affects. To conclude the section, we will have a brief discussion on managing stress. Physical and Emotional Affects Delivering bad news is very stressful to most people.
