In the article “Nihilistic Therapeutic Eating” from The American Conservative, by Rod Dreher, he discusses how society has lost sight of traditional food and social culture values, in a fast paced life with social media influencing society at large. In a fast paced world strongly influenced by social media, gone are the traditional days where family as well as individuals sit down together for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner. Instead, there may be only one main meal of the day and the rest of the meals are nothing but customized on the go types of food, or even all day snacking. Wade Thoma, vice president of U.S. Menu Innovation for McDonald’s says, “ There are no longer traditional eating hours anymore, People eat at all strange hours of the day.” As traditional eating habits change, social culture is also forced to change. In the process, losing the value of human interaction as if humans are like barbarians and animals feeding alone or even alongside one another in front of a television, desk, or car rather than sitting down and socializing over a planned meal. USA Today argues,”The fact that it is chosen, and it is convenient, doesn’t make it any less barbaric.” Dreher also states that the traditional meal settings plays a vital role in community as well as family embodiment, whether the meals take place at home or at a banquet table, testimonial table, or even picnic table. Personal Response: Throughout the years, the traditional food and social culture values have definitely changed partially from the influence of the media, as well as from one’s own values and priorities. For example, the media for years has been continuously shoving photoshopped, nutritionless, fast easy on the go prepared type foods in people’s faces.
