RACHEL CARSON What do you think it would be like to be a revolutionary? Rachel Carson was a revolutionary in the environmental movement. Rachel Carson was an active marine biologist, ecologist, and writer who helped discover more about the ocean and the effects of pesticides on nature. Rachel Carson was an inspiring writer who conveyed scientific ideas in a beautiful and understandable way. She was also a marine biologist who worked with Bureau of Fisheries and used her research to write a trilogy on the sea. Rachel Carson also was able to overcome the difficult times of her childhood to do what she dreamed of: to be a writer and a marine biologist. This paper will attempt to summarize the life and many great works of Rachel Carson. Rachel Carson once said that some of her earliest memories were of wanting to learn more about the ocean and wanting to be a writer. Rachel Louise Carson was born on May 27, 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She was born to Robert Warden and Maria McLean Carson on an old farm where they raised animals. Carson’s family was poor. Her father traveled a lot for work and while he was away, Carson’s mother gave piano lessons. Carson lived in a tiny farmhouse with the rest of her four family members. In it there were only two small bedrooms, a dining room, a small parlor, and no running water. Outside, there were two outhouses and a lean-to kitchen that also had no running water. There was an exterior building which had the water. Around the house, plant life was abundant. There were flowers, bushes, and grape vines all around the house, an orchard that one could walk to, and the Allegheny River was close by. Rachel’s mother taught her basic lessons like art, music, and literature. Rachel’s mother kindled her love of nature and writing. In most of her free time, Rachel read and explored nature.
