------------------------------------------------- The Left Hand of Darkness is Light*: Women, as actors and victims, and their role on international politics Vasco Mateus Virginia Haufler and David Prina ------------------------------------------------- 3 December 2010 *Derived from the title of Feminist Sci-fi novel “The Left Hand of Darkness, written by Ursula K. Le Guin Gender has an odd position in international politics. Women in international politics, as actors and victims, flip back and forth between having an effect on international relations and not having a serious impact. This is because we live in a patriarchal society and women are just recently gaining recognition as being actors in decision making, even though in the US women have only represented around 2% of the government (USA Today). Women, just as men, as actors in international relations are only as effective as what they have to offer; mutual benefit is the desired goal. Women as victims and their role in international politics takes a very similar position, especially when these victimized women are unable or unwilling to elevate themselves out of this situation. Women do not have a strong place in world politics as figurative heads, but some progress is being made: in the past 10 years we have had 23 women fill roles are the head of state internationally (Women in Leadership). Not having enough women in powerful political positions is a problem because a majority of the world leaders are men and because of this a valuable and much needed different perspective is needed. The same types of people are in positions of power – privileged, males in power are not an accurate representation of any population of people. One area I would like to draw attention to is Liberia.
