Taylor Duchesneau Soc.376/Maes 09-25-14 Integration Paper: “The Jungle” The story of the Rudkus family (along with close friends) in The Jungle illustrates what happened to so many immigrant families in the early twentieth century who came to America with dreams of working hard and building a better life. Jurgis Rudkus along with some family and friends decide to leave Lithuania and migrate to America in hope of finding good jobs to build a better life. After a long trip to America, that exhausts almost all the money they had saved, they arrive in Chicago’s packing town district where they have been told they would find jobs. Almost immediately they begin to understand that finding work is a competitive and oversaturated market and
In Upton Sinclirs intriguing novel The Jungle, a Lithuanian family moves to America in search for their own American dream. To begin with, Jurgis, the main character and provider for the family, Antanas Jurgis’s grandfather, Ona, Jurgisis wife and other various characters move to Chicago particularly to the locations of the stockyards. Due to this action, the family becomes a victim to sly businessmen and heinous crimes which causes their savings to diminish. (Paraphrase quote). After a difficult time, the family managed to accustom to the "American Life”, but a series of tragic events occur.
Holmes goes in to assess a partial remodel or home improvement and starts to take it back apart to figure out what unlicensed poor and incompetent contractors have done. Very often doors don’t fit, drains don’t drain and the electrical doesn’t work. He then proceeds to remodel from the ground up and demonstrate proper repairs to ensure safety. The result unlike Flip This House is a beautiful home a family will appreciate and enjoy after the harrowing experience of the sometimes twenty, fifty and seventy thousand dollar remodel that didn’t get completed
“To those at the great house it means nothing, this handful of earth, but to me it means how much” (Buck 57)! Wang Lung’s heart explodes with pride because of his purchase. He was pleased to purchase land from the place where he felt greatly looked down upon and where his wife, O-lan, had been bound to slavery throughout her childhood. The land brought Wang Lung a form of happiness and changed his life for a little time until the land started to dry up. When there is nothing left in the town, the only thing left do is move to a place that provides more.
Sinclair was inspired to write a book about the working class of America (consisting mostly of immigrants), primarily based on the packing town of Chicago and the different attitudes they can have and actions they carried out. Sinclair developed his story and his characters in an unusual way by using the third person and almost completely having no dialogue but instead used intricate details and imagery. Jurgis’ character seems to be caught in the trap of capitalism. Jurgis originally follows the harsh rules of capitalism and at first there seems to be hope that 12 hour working days (excluding Sundays) and low wages can support his big family but the society he lives beats and diminishes his expectations and hope until Jurgis completely changes and turns his life around for a life as a criminal. As a criminal, Jurgis finds money to come easier without working as hard but Jurgis learns that politics, crime and business is intertwined in Chicago and Jurgis fails again losing confidence and hope.
Explain Topic#2- Urban Immigrant Life Introduction: Written in 1906, Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle “provided a voice to the great masses of immigrants who came to America yearning to be free and comfortable and who found instead the wage slavery and misery of mill, factory, sweatshop, and slum. Sinclair highlighted the factory workers’ conditions- “physical danger, insecurity, fear, exploitation, corruption and faith.” The Jungle gives us a glimpse into immigrant life in US cities between 1880 and 1920. My initial reaction to reading this excerpt from Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” was one of awe, with a hand over my mouth for the better part of the reading. There is also a side of me that is not so surprised by any of it. The more I learn of our country’s history where government and business are concerned, the more I realize that the almighty dollar, greed, the pursuit of power, and a total disregard for average Americans and their welfare seems to be the order of operations. Upton Sinclair, a self-made success and man of meager beginnings, most likely championed such a crusade against the meat packing industry, as well as the government because of his impoverished upbringing, which would have given him first-hand knowledge and experience
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, one of Mark Twain’s most famous works, is extremely critical of slavery and racial discrimination. It was written in 1885, about twenty years after slavery was abolished in the United States, but racism was still a major problem in the country at the time. Twain tried to raise awareness of the racism he saw in the country, but was often looked down on for his views. It did not help that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was so controversial. However, this story can be a considerable asset in ridding prejudice from the modern world.
I firmly believe that these corporations have put to the side and have purposely tried to hide the actuality about how unhealthy the food they create truly is for the American community. The documentary “Food Inc.” produced by Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, takes an in depth look at America’s food business and the awful but
The short story ”Neighbors” is about an American couple living in an apartment complex. They feel alone amongst their friends, as if the only thing they have time for is to work. Because of this they envy their neighbors, the Stones, who, to them, live a better and more eventful life than themselves.
