The Jungle Summary The book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair is a timeless America classic, portraying the hardships faced by the lower class in the 1900’s meatpacking industry. This book not only highlights the horrors of unsanitary living and food conditions of the time, but also draws attention to the unfair treatment of the impoverished immigrants who moved to America with hopes of a better future. Although the books intent was not to expose the truth to this industry or draw attention to the sham of the “American Dream”, it was however was an attack of capitalism through the never ending troubles of his main characters. The book first opens to the joyful marriage of two Lithuanian immigrants, Ona Lukoszaite and Jurgis Rudkus. While this couple is extremely different in size and demeanor, they are both blissfully happy and enamored with the prospects of their new life in Chicago. Joining them in this new country is Ona’s stepmother Teta Elzbieta, Elzbieta’s many children, Elzbieta’s brother Jonas, Ona’s cousin Marija Berczynskas, and Jurgis’ father Antanas Rudkus. Although this wedding puts them in debt, the couple and their family have faith in the prospects of America. Looking for a place to stay, the family seeks help from another Lithuanian immigrant, Jokubas. He shows them a flat that is underirable but affordable, and Jurgis remains hopeful saying he will look for work to support the family. Regardless of the disgusting conditions in Packingtown, the family is still optimistic with the idea of work as Jurgis, Maria, and Jonas are all successful in finding jobs in the meatpacking industry. With this steady income they decide to move out of their crammed flat and invest in what seems like a dream house. Sadly disaster after disaster strikes for this family.
