Planning is a management function that involves foreseeing future circumstances and requirements, then, setting objectives, making long and short term plans and determining the procedures to be followed with standards to be set. It is the primary function of management that involves the determination of a course of action to achieve desired results and or objectives. It is the starting point of the management process and is the key to success, permanence and affluence in an organization. It acts as a tool for solving the problems of an organizational unit. Uniquely, planning plays a pivotal role in management as it helps to visualize future problems and keeps management ready with possible solutions and is often called the primary management function as it establishes the base for all other things managers need to accomplish. It involves two important aspects that are goals and plans. Goals are the foundation of planning as they guide management decisions and forms the criteria against which work results are measured. Whilst, plans are documents that outline how goals are going to be met. Furthermore, planning revolves around organizational goals, hence it facilitates coordination and avoids duplication of efforts by the aid of finding problems of work performance and aims at adjusting. It creates an atmosphere of order and discipline in organizations, a healthy attitude toward work environments which helps in boosting employees moral and efficiency by encouraging employees to do perform to the best of their ability and increase productivity. However, planning can be termed as a decision making function which involves creative thoughts and imagination that ultimately leads to the production of innovation methods and operation for the growth of the organization.
