The importance of Emotional Intelligence in a business context Introduction The study that will follow, focuses on the importance of the emotional intelligence in a business context. Mainly through articles, books and internet research I will try to give a definition of emotional intelligence, the origin and history of emotional intelligence, the contribution to business and management, how the emotional intelligence is measured and some questionnaires that were developed from time to time in order to measure emotional intelligence. For many years, it was thought that a person’s intelligence (IQ) determined how people succeeded in life. Schools used IQ tests to choose children for gifted programs and some companies even used IQ scores when hiring. In the last ten years, researchers have found that IQ isn’t the only predictor of a person’s success. They are now looking at emotional intelligence (EQ) as another determinant of a person’s success in life.( Nancy K. Recker 2001). Emotional intelligence is a relatively new and growing area of behavioral research, having caught the imagination of the general public, the commercial world and the scientific community (Moshe Zeidner, Gerrald Mathews, Richard D. Roberts 2004). According to Zeidner, Mathews and Roberts, emotional intelligence combines definitions from psychological science including emotions, self-regulation theories, and the search for human cognitive abilities beyond “traditional” academic intelligence.
