BZ15 ENGL 102 C17W Instructor 12 March 2015 The Value of Education Education is about more than the grades received. It is about knowing right from wrong and having the capacity to do so in a society. Education teaches respect and how to develop our own opinions and perspective of the world. Without education, sensory information would simply be lost. Education allows us to process the information we receive on a daily basis and make conclusions and inferences based on what we already know. A high school education is inadequate for individuals to succeed in America today. However, due to the outrageous cost for a college education Americans are unable to afford the education to further their potential income. The premise of freedom and equal opportunity that America was built upon has grievously been replaced with a system that provides a quality education only to those who have access to wealth. Any student wishing to attend college within their state of residence should have the opportunity to attend, no matter their economic or racial background. In the article 'The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me' the author strongly encourages education throughout Indian reservations where many children have no desire to learn. “I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives” (Alexie). Being able to achieve a higher education is directly related to the level of poverty in America. Instead of offering additional funding for various welfare programs the federal government should make a college education affordable to everyone. This would allow a wider variety of people to become educated and contribute to society. Higher education varies from one institution to another and depends primarily on what is the right fit for the individual.
