The recitation, study, and belief of creeds are a necessary and useful tool for several reasons. Many people hold differing opinions about the purpose of the creeds and what they mean, but the notion of Sola scriptura will be defended in this essay. Sola Scriptura, and other terms will be defined later.
Deuteronomy 11:18-19 says, “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” We are instructed to study the Bible, remember it, and contemplate it. What better way to do this than to study the creeds? When we study the creeds, we remember God’s word, His laws, and His promise of salvation through his son. If we go through our entire walk with the Lord, and never study the creeds, we will lose track of what He wants of us. Studying the creeds regularly will help us to achieve closeness with God and His word, and will also help maintain our faith in Him.   Studying the creeds helps us to remember that there is a God, and it challenges us to think about what we believe and why we believe it.
            If you never study the creeds, but claim to be a Christian, go to a church every Sunday, do good things, and most importantly believe in God’s salvation; you are still a Christian and you will be with the Lord in the end. However, this should not be our goal. We should not go about our walk through life living a half-Christian one. We are called as believers to ponder the Word of God, study it, obey it, teach it, and remember it. Without the creeds, we may still be able to remember the Word and study it, but it would not be easy. We need the creeds to help us further understand Scripture, and to help us obey it, and it will help us commit to what we believe. Our journey...
