The Impacts of Technology on Children

The rapid development of technology has been a significant part of our daily life and it is affecting our lifestyle drastically. Traditionally, parents and teachers are the main social models for children; however, their influence is in decline as the result of the improvement of technological advancement in their household economics. Aside from their busy schedules, nowadays families seem to gather around less since each one has easy access to their own cellphones, computers, etc. This would imply that children to interact less with their parents and spend more time on their own. Thus, children could turn their attention from their parents to television watching. And without their parents’ guidance or control, such exposure can become unguarded. In the following essay, I will illustrate my points of views on TV programs, smartphone applications and Internet. Firstly, it is understandable that TV can give a better learning opportunity. Children that are exposed to educational programs are more likely to adapt to what they are watching. Nevertheless, if children are not supervised correctly by their parents they can switch what they watch and they may be exposed to some channels or TV shows that are not age appropriate. Sometimes, parents let their children watch TV so that they will be quiet, this way, parents can concentrate on other things. But, if the child starts learning things from channels like MTV and SPIKE Television, then a lot of problems can be developed in this child’s future. Although TV shouldn’t be banned, it should be, at least, limited and exposed with parental supervision. Aside from that, the effect of smartphone applications for children can hinder their pro-social behavior learning.
