Data published by NHS show that there is high number of measles reported due to 1-16 years old children who missed the vaccinations between 1990s and 2000s. In 2012 the numbers of cases was 2,000. The fears are now concerned on the MMR vaccination, as now there is also a big group of children who did not received their vaccination. Childhood Obesity Policy Obesity is one of the leading health problems of the 21st century. According to Ferry, 31.7% of children between the ages of 2-19 and 34.2% of adolescents are obese (Ferry1406). About 1/3 of all children in America are obese, that is an alarming number and it must be lowered. Childhood obesity that develops into adulthood is only second, in deaths that could have been prevented, to tobacco (Ferry 1406). We can now see obesity is the second killer behind tobacco that could have been prevented with the proper lifestyle changes.

Are We the Dumbest Generation? Adults often argue that the intellectual ability of today’s generations has taken a turn for the worst due to the amount of technology they are exposed to as they develop mature ideals. English professor Mark Bauerlein examines in his 2008 book the effects of digital media and how it has caused young people to be more connected and technologically savvy as a result of the wide range of modern inventions, but he also asserts that this has caused them to become less intelligent; therefore, he presents the modern ages as the Dumbest Generation. Young people have a tremendous amount of information available to them due to technology through social networks, the internet, and video games. Many respectable individuals discuss on whether to call the modern generation the “dumbest generation” (Bauerlein) or realizing that they might be participating in an intellectual revolution.
(“States Seeks to Block ‘No Child Left Behind’”). Even gym and recess are being reduced in schools around the United States due to teaching being pointed towards the test. This has only caused a negative effect as the number of obese children has risen. Standardized test and the NCLB Act are only harming the health of children- mentally and physically. Furthermore, United States needs to follow the following guidelines that countries more advanced in education than the United States have been following.
Obviously our kids are becoming overweight with all of the unhealthy choices they have to choose from. Childhood obesity in the United States has grown at a phenomenal rate in the last few years. You would think this is an easy condition to treat but unfortunately it’s not, it is actually quite difficult. Kids are becoming less active and their eating habits are virtually non-existent. The annual cost to treat obesity is nearly two billion dollars.

This report was called A Nation at Risk: the Imperative for Educational Reform and discusses how the U.S.’s educational system lacks in structure, expectations, time in learning, and teaching (Gardner, 2011). Today we find that we are still behind other advanced nations due to globalization, and technological advances that require young people, of today, to have higher education levels than ever before. What starts as a few extra pounds as a young child can become a fateful road to depression and regret.
