April Davis ENC 1102 5 February 2012 The Impact of Technology on Teens The Merriam-Webster definition of the word technology is, “a capability given by the practical application of knowledge.” Examples range from video games with built-in Wi-Fi to voice activated smart phones, even touch screen televisions. If that’s not slightly unsettling, maybe the fact that technology is rapidly increasing is. Yes, technology has made the lives of many much more convenient, stress, free, and more rapid. On the downside, it has made those same lives lazier, and very unhealthy. Teenagers are being made the main ones to suffer from the side effects of technology. According to VGChartz.com, as of December 31, 2011, the U.S. alone sold a total of over 52 million Xbox 360’s and Playstation 3’s. Video games contribute to the downside of technology due to the fact that it requires so much time in front of the television, as to where 20 years ago, children would have rather played because there were pleasure of having a television screen available. Video games, TV, computers and other forms of technology contribute to the fast growing rate of obese children. The government on childhood obesity report that approximately 17% or 12.5 million children and adolescents aged 2-19 is obese. Technology impact of education is problematic premise, an idea that generates controversy from the earliest of primary school grades right through to the top of the academic pyramid graduates school. Some elements in the World of Education still want to stress cursive penmanship and hand-editing, it is hard not to admit that technology, specifically the internet and personal computing, have transformed the modern world. Materials that modern students were raised with are completely different that to not give them their due would be to cheapen the impact of what might otherwise be a
